Continuing Education Training
DKI Calgary teaches continuing education (CEC) courses for insurance professionals, property managers and restoration teams. Our eight courses explain what happens after a water, fire or contamination loss, and most are approved for credits by the Alberta Insurance Council, the IICRC and the RIA.
Continuing Education Training
We host many CEC’s throughout the year to help you understand the various types of losses that happen and put your customer at ease. These CEC’s help keep you up to date on the latest techniques and procedures that professional Disaster Restoration and Remediation contractors do.
Send us an email today at info@rccn.ca and let us know which courses you are interested in.
Our Continuing Education Courses help you and your staff better understand the principles and best practices in understanding the effects of various types of disaster situations. Understanding the steps involved in restoring buildings envelope, structure and the contents helps you provide greater service to your customers and insureds.
The majority of our classes qualify for CEC’s with these organizations:
The Alberta Insurance Council
The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)
The Restoration Industry Association (RIA)
The majority of our courses listed above have been submitted and approved by the Accreditation Committee of Alberta Insurance Council. For more information on the Ongoing Education Requirements of the Alberta Insurance Council click here: www.abcouncil.ab.ca/ongoing-education-requirements/
The IICRC does not have schools or instructors; rather it approves schools, CEC’s and instructors to teach and administer the IICRC certification programs. Our courses, as indicated above, have been approved by an the IICRC and are given by an approved instructor.
Our CEC’s and Instructors are approved by the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) for Continuing Education Credits with the RIA.
CEC Training in Calgary for Insurance and Property Professionals
If you are an insurance agent, broker or adjuster, you are often the first person a policyholder calls after a flood, fire or sewer backup. Property and condo managers are in the same position when a tenant reports a leak at midnight. Knowing what a restoration contractor does next, and why, helps you set realistic expectations, ask better questions and keep the claim moving.
Each course draws on the kinds of losses DKI Calgary restores across Calgary and area, from emergency mitigation and contaminated water to asbestos abatement and full rebuilds. Courses are given by an IICRC-approved instructor, and our instructors are also approved by the Restoration Industry Association (RIA). If you look after buildings, our page on restoration services for property managers explains how we support you after a loss.
Who our CEC courses help:
Insurance agents and brokers
Field and desk adjusters
Residential and commercial property managers
Condo boards and building managers
Restoration technicians earning IICRC or RIA credits
Our Restoration Industry Training Courses
Each course looks at one type of loss from the restoration side: what causes it, how it is assessed, and what has to happen before repairs can start. Most of the courses below have been approved by the Accreditation Committee of the Alberta Insurance Council, and most also qualify for IICRC and RIA continuing education credits.
Mitigation Awareness
An introduction to emergency mitigation, the first stage of many property claims. It looks at why fast action limits damage, what a crew does in the first hours after a loss, such as water extraction, drying, board-up and tarping, and how those early steps shape the claim.
Water Damage… The Whole Story
Follows a water loss from the first call to the finished repair. Topics include common sources of water damage, the IICRC water categories and classes, moisture mapping and structural drying, and when materials can be dried in place or need to be removed.
Hoarding
Explains how restoration crews approach hoarding cleanup: assessing safety hazards, sorting and removing contents with respect for the occupant, cleaning and deodorizing, and finding hidden damage such as leaks, pests or mould that clutter can conceal.
Environmental Awareness in Restoration (Regarding Mould, Asbestos, and Lead)
Covers three hazards that often turn up during restoration work: mould after water damage, asbestos in materials common in homes built before about 1990, and lead in older paint. Learn why testing comes first and how containment protects occupants during mould remediation and abatement.
Trauma, Grow-Op, and Meth Lab Clean Up… Not for the Faint of Heart
A look at biohazard work most people never see: trauma and crime scene cleanup, former grow-ops and drug lab decontamination. It covers health and safety risks, protective equipment, decontamination and verification, and what a property needs before it can be safely reoccupied.
Fire & Smoke Damage Refresher
A refresher on how fire, smoke and soot behave inside a building. It reviews the different types of smoke residue, odour control, contents cleaning and pack-outs, and how damage to the structure and building systems is assessed before rebuilding starts.
Contaminated Water Restoration
Focuses on Category 2 and Category 3 water damage, such as sewer backups and overland flooding. It covers the health risks, protective equipment, which porous materials have to be removed, and how affected areas are cleaned, sanitized and dried.
Abatement 101
An introduction to abatement on restoration jobs, with a focus on asbestos and other hazardous building materials. It explains sampling and lab testing, containment and negative air, safe removal and disposal, and why Part 4 of the Alberta OHS Code governs asbestos abatement.

Frequently Asked Questions – CEC Training in Calgary
Are your CEC courses approved by the Alberta Insurance Council?
Most of them are. The majority of our courses have been submitted to and approved by the Accreditation Committee of the Alberta Insurance Council, so licensed agents, brokers and adjusters can count them toward their ongoing education requirements. When you book, tell us which course you are interested in and we will confirm its approval status before the session.
Do your courses count as IICRC continuing education?
Yes, most of them do. The IICRC does not run its own schools or employ instructors; it approves schools, continuing education courses and instructors. Our courses have been approved by the IICRC and are given by an approved instructor, so certified technicians can use them toward the credits they need to keep their certification current. Our courses and instructors are also approved by the Restoration Industry Association (RIA).
Will these courses give me an IICRC certification?
No. Our courses are continuing education, not certification programs. IICRC certifications such as WRT (water damage restoration) or FSRT (fire and smoke restoration) are earned through IICRC-approved certification courses and exams. Our CEC courses suit people who work with restoration claims, or who already hold an IICRC certification and need credits to maintain it. Several of our IICRC-certified project managers hold these designations.
Which course should a new adjuster or broker take first?
A good starting point is Mitigation Awareness or Water Damage… The Whole Story, because water losses such as burst pipes and sewer backups are among the most common home insurance claims. From there, Fire & Smoke Damage Refresher and Contaminated Water Restoration build on the basics. If your files include older buildings, Environmental Awareness in Restoration and Abatement 101 are useful next steps.
